πŸ‘€Brief 01 example: Terrariums to cheeseplants

by Lawrence Parent

Terrarium

This is a terrarium I recently made at a local terrarium making workshop. Terrariums are a closed biosphere that maintains itself - it shouldn't ever need watering or feeding. There were first discovered as a form of transporting plants from South America to the UK when a scientist left a bit of n a glass jar and noticed plants growing out of mossy bark.

Biosphere 2

Biosphere 2 - Biosphere 2 is the largest artificially closed ecological system in the world and is in Arizona. An artificially closed ecological system is called a s vivarium which is similar to a terrarium but supports animal life as well as plants. In the 80s an experiment was conducted to demonstrate the viability of closed ecological systems to maintain human life in outer space.

Aerofarms

This is an example of a vertical farm, this particular farm is operated by Aerofarms and is located in Newark, America. Vertical farms could be the future of farming because we are running out of agricultural land to support the Earths increasing population. Vertical farms can be installed within high rise buildings in cities saving land space.

Quantum computing

Quantum computers are used for completing extremely complex tasks and algorithm standard computing systems can’t be used for such as finding extremely high prime number which is used in data security.

DMC Delorean

This is the DMC Delorean, famously used in the back to the future film series. The design became iconic for its gull-wing doors and brushed stainless steel body and futuristic design. Although its power and performance was disappointing considering the extremely high price tag.

Little Tykes Car

This is the little tyles red and yellow plastic moulded car. It is an iconic toy car kids can play, sit in and wheel around. Its design has been described as a cross between Volkswagon Beetle and Fred Flintstones vehicle. It has been considered the worlds best selling car for much of its decade – outselling the honda accord and for Taurus.

Brutalist playgrounds

This is a playground in Churchill estate in Pimlico, London in 1978. Its described as a brutalist playground for the designers use of concrete and bold angular shapes. This playground was recreated out of pastel coloured form blocks for an art installation in 2015 for the royal institute for British architects celebrating brutalist design.

Concrete Memory Stick

Concrete memory stick – This is a concrete memory stick made by USBeton. It's handcrafted in Berlin and is extremely shock and water-resistant with an elegant and original design. The company describe it as an architectural building, needing lots of space and storage capacity protected from the elements.

German Tinderbox

This is the first-ever lighter, known as a tinderbox. It was designed by a German chemist named Jonan Doboreiner and uses a chemical reaction between platinum and hydrogen to ignite when a valve is opened. The technology was too complicated to mass-produce and was far too large to be fitted in a pocket.

Zippo Lighter

This is one of the early Zippo lighters, first produced in 1936. The zippo became known as the best pocket lighter due to its high fuel capacity, and trademark clicking top. This particular lighter is a wartime issue around the time they ceased civilian production and only manufactured for the American military. The zippo is also known for being a personal belonging people treasure and upgrade as they age. The flint and wick can be replaced and the fluid, easily refilled

Fairphone

This is the Fairphone 3, made by Fairphone who are an ethical dutch mobile phone company producing smartphones with responsibly sourced materials and components, such as fairtrade gold The phone is also designed to be easily taken apart to upgrade parts when they become outdated or break. This also makes it incredibly easy to disassemble for recycling at the end of the product life.

Agbogloshie

This is Agbogloshie, a district in the centre of accra, ghanas capital city. It was alleged to be at the centre of a legal and illegal exportation network for the environmental dumping of electronic waste (e-waste) from industrialised nations. The burning of PCBs produce toxic fumes which Greenpeace lab tests have shown the water and soil from these areas contained concentrations of chemicals at levels a hundred times more than the allowable amount.

PCB London Underground

This is a map of the London underground on a PCB. The designer wanted to make the components visible so that consumers can better understand the working behind the exterior of today's electronic products. He did this by creating a narrative explaining how electronics work and they can fix their own broken devices.

To Speak Again

This is called the 'speak again translator,' a device for people more fluent in emoji than speech. It was designed for Beirut design week by a group of Lebanese university students exploring speculative and critical design. They aimed to use design fiction and speculative design proposals to challenge assumptions and create debate.

Future Marriage

Future marriage – This is another example of speculative design exploring the challenges married couples might face as technology advances and life spans increase. Alice Wang designed 3 wedding rings addressing this issue. The ring above has a timer counting down the days until the couple have the option to decide whether they want to renew their marriage or split up. The idea is that having a time limit removes the negative associations with divorce.

Solid Diamond Ring

This ring is made out of a solid block of diamond artificially produced by the diamond foundry. Using lab-grown diamonds removes the environmental and social costs of traditional diamond mining. This particular ring was designed Jony Ive, design chief for apple and was sold for $256,250.

Wells Cathedral

This is the interior of Wells Cathedral, a beautiful Gothic cathedral in Somerset. Gothic cathedrals resonate at the same frequency as the earth itself – seven and a half hertz – which happens also to be the frequency of the brain whilst in its most receptive and relaxed Alpha state.

Fly's Eyes Dome

This is the fly eyes dome designed by Buckminster Fuller, he nicknamed the autonomous dwelling machine. He, unfortunately, died before the design was complete but in 2011 the Buckminster fuller institute and a series of other composite material design companies began the development of program to complete fullers vision.

Algae Infused Tiles

These are tiles infused with algae that can be used to filter toxic chemicals out of water. They were developed by the bio integrated design lab and they use a modular array system that water can be poured through, a chemical reaction takes place removing toxins and making the water safe for consumption.

Swiss Cheese Plant

The cheese plant is an iconic houseplant with hundreds of interior design Instagrams featuring one in an interior background. It also is a very easy house plant to look after, increasing its popularity among millennials. The leaves have small holes running through them giving its nickname the swiss cheese plant because swiss cheese also have holes in.
